New Project with Craig Pruess

Oliver and Craig Pruess, the internationally acclaimed musician, met at the Arthur of the Britons reunion in Stroud the year before last. They decided then to make an album together consisting of speech and music with Oliver doing the narrating, the story telling.

They have quietly been working on the project of ancient texts, over the last year, at Craig’s studio. On Oliver’s last visit he again stayed at The Imperial Hotel in Stroud where the reunion had taken place. He had fond memories of everyone who had come from near and far to take part in the reunion.

The album still needs some work on it but will definitely be released this year!

"Luke's Kingdom" DVD is available again

This DVD, long awaited by many fans, had vanished from the networkdvd-Website in August last year. This was due to the destruction of the Sony Warehouse where "Network" had all their DVD-stock. It's not difficult to understand, that it needed some time to bring back the complete catalogue, but now it is done.

According to Network "... Luke's Kingdom is a web exclusive, ...(it) ...will be available to buy until 13th January 2013."

'Dreams' - Neues Projekt

'Dreams' - New Project

Oliver is back from Zurich where he directed the Non Profit shortfilm 'Dreams'.

The 20 minutes long shortfilm DREAMS tells the story of a group of teenagers, who play in a band, follow their dreams and have to come back to reality as time goes by. However their dream becomes reality with the certainty of a first public performance. The film highlights what social support is necessary to realise a dream or find a realistic perspective.

Feature - Oliver's Motorbikes

‘Life is a fragmented construction’, I think, while sorting through the photos for the feature about Oliver’s bikes. Motorbikes.  A lifelong hobby. "I just love to ride them. I don’t know why”, he says.

And because Oliver is Oliver, we speak not only about bikes, but about exquisite collector’s items. The show-piece comes first: His Ducati. A powerful machine. Nothing but lavishly sweeping lines. If you look closely, you can see that the red painted chassis only gives space for one seat. And there isn't any room for luggage. The bike is a replica of the racing machine, which Mike Hailwood rode to legendary victory at the Isle of Man. One thinks, it should look a little pretentious, perhaps like a Porsche, that usually has something eccentric and arrogant about it. It should really make the driver look small, but the opposite is true. Man and machine match perfectly.

Does one ride such a motorbike for sheer pleasure? It doesn’t look comfy, but challenging. Or is the challenge the pleasure? As a racing machine it is solely constructed to function. Not only the engine but also the design. Design and function. Its entity is purely technical. So where does the beauty come from? I look at the picture – there she is. One of a kind. Aloof. "Don’t you dare to touch me!“ it seems to tell the admirer. But one is nonetheless under her spell. The longing view lasts long…

In comparison the Triumph is quite the opposite. It looks much smaller, almost filigree. Completely unpretentious. No chassis, the engine is only protected by a chrome cover and all the technical parts are visible. The machine is black with a few shiny fenders. A model from the 60ies or the 70ies I would recon. Only on second look you see how perfectly proportioned it is. A bike that wants to be used and riden. The machine invites you to ride into town on short notice, because you have forgotten to buy milk - even with a scull and crossbones lingering just underneath the double-seat. During the nights and on some days it might lead a double life.

The Triumph is an heirloom from Oliver’s late friend Johnny Stuart. It was his favourite bike. I read the obituary from the “Daily Telegraph” on the website several times. Russian art and the youth culture of the 1950ies and 1960ies. A scholar with a passion for orthodox religion and motorbikes, who has written books about Russian icons and rockers. A sort of Renaissance man perhaps? One, who didn’t know barriers? No wonder that the two became friends.

Oliver has restored the Triumph and rides it regularly. She is in good hands, I think. On the photo, rays of sunlight reflect on her chrome parts. Functional and perfectly formed it draws the viewer into her spell…

'Luke's Kingdom' - DVD: running order of episodes

regarding the two episodes that are out of sequence, I got this answer from "Network":

Dear Oliver,

To answer your question about the running order on our Luke’s Kingdom set, the issue was initially queried and discussed in our office when these masters were originally supplied to us by Granada . In these cases, we refer to the original TV Times and the order – though chronologically wrong – was listed here as per TX and, unusually for that magazine, the episode titles are actually numbered. Given this, we felt it best to stick with the TX order as it was obviously “as intended” by the production company, even if it didn’t make strict chronological sense. We have a tradition of releasing archive titles as per TX dates because, as strange as it may sound, we receive more queries from customers when we amend the running order than we do if we release them as originally broadcast…

Interview with Oliver on BBC 1

Here is an interview Oliver did for BBC 1:
Rewinding the Sixties - 1968 - 1969
The interview is about the Musical "Hair" where he played a main role in 1968/1969. It was done in the Shaftesbury Theatre!

Broadcast: BBC 1, 19. November 2010, 9:15 h

You can watch the interview on the homepage of BBC 1, if you are an inhabitant of the UK. Follow this link:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00w5p78
and go about 15 minutes into the programme.

This is quoted from the description on the Website:

"...In the theatre too, old rules were being rewritten. Actor Oliver Tobias, one of the original stars of the hippy musical Hair, joins Lulu and John Craven in the studio. For most of the 1960s, the Lord Chamberlain still had the right to censor every theatrical production and could refuse to give a play its licence. But his powers were abolished in 1968, and when Hair opened shortly afterwards, it had the freedom to break all kinds of taboos. Oliver recalls how the script called on him to use the f-word around 30 times in 5 seconds, to interact directly with the audience, and also to appear naked on stage. “I remember at school saying my worst nightmare would be to appear naked in front of everyone. Little did I know when I was 21, I’d be on stage doing the same thing”. Lulu, who was in the audience on that first night, remembers that she had to close her eyes during the show’s notorious al fresco moment...."

and when you scroll down on the Website, you will also find a nice foto...

from Oliver about the Website

Having been left in the dark too long Fans banded together, fought hard and long to conquer back this site. It was their uprising that has brought about this change.

A fresh new gentle following wind is blowing now to once again fill the sails of this adventure with new blue horizons.

I thank those who made me aware especially! All who have supported me so loyally throughout from the bottom of my heart.
